“I grew up in Bethesda, Maryland, and learned to ski as a kid. I love winter, so when I ended up in Fairbanks it was great to get out and ski. I just find it inspiring to look at what’s around you and try to figure out how it works.

"My wife and I talk about airlock people, people who are always in their house in winter. They look out the window like, “Wow, it’s really cold; I can’t go out there.” Then they get in their spaceship car to go to the store. I think airlock people don’t last long because they think it’s inhospitable here, but if you go outside you realize it’s beautiful. Yes, it is cold, but we’ve got jackets.”
